What Is An ACH Routing
Number?
An ACH Routing Number identifies the
primary branch that acts as a clearing house for checks, not
necessarily the Branch the check was drawn on.
Banks can have one or many routing
numbers assigned to them, and sub branches operate under one or
more of those numbers.
The movement of a check from the
depository institution at which it was deposited back to the
institution on which it was written, as well as the movement of funds in
the opposite direction and the corresponding credit and debit
to the involved accounts.
The Federal Reserve operates a
nationwide check-clearing system.
